How to Write a Product Demo Video Script That Converts (2026)

Maybe LabsBy the Maybe Labs team

Most demo video scripts fail for the same reason most landing pages do: they describe features instead of changing a belief. A viewer who finishes your demo should believe one specific thing — that this product solves their problem faster or more reliably than what they use today. Everything in the script either builds that belief or gets cut. If you need the blank template first, start with product video script template; this post shows how to fill it in for a demo specifically.

Demo vs explainer vs walkthrough

These three formats get conflated constantly, and the script structure differs for each. An explainer answers 'what is this?' for cold traffic. A demo answers 'does this actually work?' for warm traffic who already understand the category. A walkthrough answers 'how do I use it?' for existing users or high-intent evaluators. Mix them and you get a video that tries to teach, sell, and onboard simultaneously — and converts none of those audiences. See product video vs explainer video and what is a product demo video.

The four-beat demo script structure

Every converting demo script follows the same four beats, regardless of product category. The timings below assume a 60-second video; scale proportionally for longer demos.

  • Hook (0–5s) — name the pain or flash the outcome. No logo, no 'welcome to'.
  • Context (5–15s) — one sentence on who this is for and what they're doing today without your product.
  • Proof (15–50s) — show the product doing the thing. Screen recording, animated UI, or designed mock — but the product must be visible.
  • Close (50–60s) — one CTA. 'Start free', 'Book a demo', 'Try it now'. Not three options.

Worked example: a 60-second demo script

Product: a tool that turns Slack threads into tracked action items. Target viewer: a team lead at a 20–200 person startup. Placement: pricing page and sales follow-up.

ProofRelay reads the thread, assigns owners, sets dates.Product UI: thread → action items appearing

Hook patterns that work for demos

  • Status quo tension — 'Still exporting CSVs every Monday?'
  • Broken promise — 'You set up the integration. It broke again.'
  • Transformation glimpse — 'From thread to task board in 8 seconds.' (show outcome first)
  • Specific number — '47 tabs open. One dashboard.'

For deeper hook craft, see launch video script walkthrough and the anatomy of a launch video. Demo hooks differ slightly — they're allowed to assume more category knowledge — but the three-second rule is identical.

Common demo script mistakes

  • Opening with the company name or tagline — wastes the hook window.
  • Listing features instead of showing one workflow end-to-end.
  • Using placeholder data that looks fake — undermines the 'does it work?' promise.
  • Running longer than 90 seconds without a reason — demo viewers are evaluating, not browsing.
  • Ending with 'learn more at our website' instead of a specific action.

Product demo video script FAQ

How long should a product demo video script be?

60 seconds is the default for conversion-focused demos. Sales demos can run 90–120 seconds if every beat shows product proof. Anything over two minutes needs chapter markers or it's a walkthrough, not a demo.

Should a demo video have a voiceover?

Optional. Text-driven demos often outperform narrated ones in feeds because most viewing is muted. If you narrate, write the script for the ear — shorter sentences, present tense, no jargon.

How is a demo script different from a launch video script?

Launch scripts assume cold traffic and spend more time on positioning. Demo scripts assume the viewer already knows the category and jump to proof faster. See product demo videos that convert.

Can AI write a demo video script?

AI can draft beats and hooks from a product description, but you must edit for specificity — generic scripts are the main reason demo videos feel interchangeable. Paste your actual UI flows and real user pain points into the prompt.

Turn your demo script into a finished video: describe the workflow to Maybe Labs and get an on-brand demo clip — script, motion, and export — without opening an editor.
